Bob Vylan to Sue BBC for Defamation Following Fallout From 2025 Glastonbury Set

The British punk-rap duo Bob Vylan announced Friday that it intends to pursue a defamation lawsuit against the BBC, accusing the broadcaster of mischaracterizing the group in the wake of its widely discussed performance at Glastonbury in 2025.

In a statement posted to social media, the band said the corporation moved quickly after the festival to attach labels to them that the group insists have never accurately described who they are or what they stand for.

The controversy stems from the duo's set on the festival's West Holts Stage, during which frontman Bobby Vylan led the crowd in chants calling for Palestinian freedom and directing hostility toward the Israel Defense Forces.

Festival organizers publicly condemned the remarks at the time, and the BBC, which had broadcast the performance live, subsequently announced that it would not make the set available for on-demand viewing afterward.

The duo argued that the broadcaster's response reflects a broader pattern of behavior, accusing the BBC of trying to suppress people who speak out against what the band describes as serious wrongdoing in Palestine. Bob Vylan claimed the corporation has a history of branding such critics as antisemitic, altering their public remarks, pulling their content and even blocking documentaries that push back against narratives favored by BBC leadership. The band framed the legal action as a direct response to that pattern, saying the corporation's conduct left them with no real alternative but to fight back through the courts.

Bob Vylan also took aim at how the BBC is funded, noting that the organization draws the bulk of its budget from public money. The duo argued that this funding structure makes the broadcaster's alleged bias especially troubling, saying it undercuts the public's ability to access news coverage free of institutional slant.

The band described the decision to sue as an opportunity to demonstrate that the people the BBC sought to silence still retain meaningful power, and said they were taking particular satisfaction in making that point through litigation.

Shortly after the festival, the U.S. State Department revoked visas held by members of Bob Vylan, effectively complicating the group's ability to tour in the United States. Several other music festivals across Europe also dropped the duo from their lineups in the aftermath of the controversy. Separately, law enforcement in the United Kingdom weighed whether the chants led during the performance warranted criminal charges, though that investigation was ultimately closed without any charges being filed.

Despite the professional and legal consequences that followed, Bobby Vylan has remained defiant about the performance itself. In an interview given several months after the festival, he said he would repeat the same performance without hesitation if given the chance to appear at Glastonbury again, adding that he felt no regret over what happened and would be willing to do it more than once if the opportunity arose.

The planned lawsuit marks the latest chapter in a controversy that has followed Bob Vylan since the summer of 2025, one that has touched on questions of free expression, media bias and the limits of political speech at major public events.

Bob Vylan has not indicated a timeline for when the defamation suit might formally be filed; it remains to be seen how the broadcaster will respond to the band's allegations.
