The investigation into the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and philanthropist Michele Reiner, remains incomplete, with authorities confirming that final autopsy reports have yet to be issued months after the couple was found dead inside their Los Angeles home.

During a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutors revealed that the reports are still pending, even as their son, Nick Reiner, continues to face charges in connection with the killings. Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chung told the court that although a substantial volume of evidence, estimated at two terabytes, would be turned over to the defense, the medical examiner’s final findings had not yet been completed. A spokesperson for the district attorney’s office later said there was no clear timeline for when those reports would be finalized.

Nick Reiner, 32, appeared in court wearing jail-issued clothing and restraints. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 30 days, a move that allows more time for both sides to review evidence. After briefly consulting with his public defender, Kimberly Greene, he confirmed to the judge that he understood the delay.

Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder stemming from the deaths of his parents. Authorities allege that he fatally stabbed both victims inside the family’s Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025. The couple was discovered in the primary bedroom, and the county medical examiner has previously stated that both died from multiple sharp force injuries. Prosecutors have identified a knife as the suspected weapon.

The case has drawn widespread attention not only because of the high-profile victims but also due to Reiner’s documented history of mental health challenges and substance abuse. Reports indicate that he had been treated for schizophrenia and later diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, a condition that combines symptoms of psychosis with mood disturbances. According to prior reporting, he was placed under a confidential conservatorship in 2020 and had been taking psychiatric medication as part of his treatment.

However, accounts suggest that changes to his medication regimen may have occurred shortly before the killings. While treatment had reportedly been effective at one point, side effects allegedly prompted a switch in medication approximately one month before the incident.

Law enforcement records also indicate prior interactions with the Reiner family home. Police responded to calls at the residence in 2019, including a welfare check and a separate incident described as related to mental health concerns. At his initial court appearance days after his arrest, Reiner was reportedly placed in a suicide-prevention garment.

The events leading up to the killings have further underscored the suddenness of the tragedy. The night before their deaths, Rob and Michele Reiner attended a holiday gathering hosted by Conan O'Brien. O’Brien later described the couple as “lovely people” and said he was shocked upon learning of their deaths the following day.

Nick Reiner had previously spoken publicly about his struggles. In past interviews, he detailed a history of addiction that began in adolescence, including time spent in multiple rehabilitation programs. He also co-wrote a screenplay based on his experiences, which became the 2016 film Being Charlie, directed by his father. In a 2018 podcast appearance, he recounted a period of erratic behavior during substance use, describing actions that he later characterized as lacking logic.

Family members have also spoken out about the emotional toll of the incident. In a recent essay, Nick’s brother, Jake Reiner, described the aftermath as a “living nightmare,” emphasizing the compounded trauma of losing both parents while grappling with the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

A follow-up hearing has been scheduled for September 15.
