Chris Brown avoided jail Monday, October 26, 2026, after a London court sentenced the R&B singer to eight months in prison, suspended for one year, for attacking a music producer with a tequila bottle at a nightclub in 2023.
Judge Tony Baumgartner handed down the sentence at Southwark Crown Court, allowing Brown, 37, to remain free unless he commits another offense during the 12-month suspension period. Brown was also ordered to pay £1,500 (about $2,000) in prosecution costs.
The sentence stems from a February 19, 2023, confrontation at Tape nightclub in London's Mayfair district, where Brown attacked music producer Abraham Diaw, a former friend. Surveillance footage shown in court captured Brown striking Diaw repeatedly with a heavy tequila bottle, including two blows to his head, before throwing punches as the producer attempted to escape.
Brown's friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also known as Hoody Baby, joined the assault, grabbing Diaw as the confrontation continued. Diaw fell to the floor and was subsequently treated at a hospital for head and knee injuries. Prosecutors said the attack lasted approximately 20 seconds.
Baumgartner described Brown's actions as "plainly dangerous," emphasizing the risk of serious injury from repeatedly striking someone in the head with a glass bottle. He also warned that "commercial success does not attract preferential treatment" in sentencing.
The judge considered Brown's guilty plea, stable employment, charitable work, and recent record in deciding to suspend the prison term. Although Brown had previous convictions, Baumgartner acknowledged that he had avoided further convictions in recent years.
Akinlolu, 40, received a four-month prison sentence, also suspended for 12 months, and was separately ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
Brown and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray in July, after prosecutors agreed to drop more serious charges against the singer, including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon.
Under English law, affray involves using or threatening unlawful violence toward another person in circumstances that would cause someone of reasonable firmness to fear for their safety. The offense carries a maximum prison sentence of three years.
Brown's attorney, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, described the confrontation as an "ugly and unattractive incident" during Monday's hearing. She told the court that Brown wished to offer "a profound apology to all those present" and emphasized the brief duration of the attack.
The singer was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 after returning to England for a concert, more than two years after the nightclub confrontation. Authorities had issued a warrant following his departure from the United Kingdom.
Diaw also pursued a separate civil lawsuit against Brown, filed in October 2023, seeking $16 million in damages for alleged physical and emotional injuries. The producer withdrew the lawsuit in June 2025, although the reasons for its dismissal have not been publicly established.
The sentencing comes as Brown continues his professional commitments, including a joint North American tour with Usher. Three scheduled performances were recently canceled, with organizers citing the health and well-being of the touring party and crew. The tour is scheduled to resume November 5 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
