Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickup trucks from the 2023 through 2027 model years because their fuel tanks may not be properly secured and can leak or detach while the vehicles are being driven.
A detached tank can become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash. Leaking fuel can also cause the engine to stall or raise the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ford's recall filing lists no advance warning that would alert drivers before the problem develops.
The defect involves the front straps that hold the fuel tank to the truck's frame. On some affected F-150s, sections of those straps were not properly inserted into the frame rail during assembly, potentially leaving the tank unsecured.
Certain trucks built between January 4, 2023, and August 27, 2026, are included in the recall.
Ford began investigating in July after concerns about unsecured fuel tanks reached its Critical Concern Review Group. The company later found that affected trucks had been built during periods when camera systems used to verify installation of the fuel tank straps were not continuously in use.
By August 27, Ford had identified 16 warranty claims worldwide tied to the condition. The automaker said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries connected to the defect.
Only about 1% of the recalled trucks are estimated to have improperly secured tanks. Ford determined that problems caused by incorrectly installed straps would likely surface early in a vehicle's service life.
Dealers will inspect the fuel tank straps and secure or replace them when necessary at no charge. Notification letters are expected to begin going out September 21.
Ford identifies the campaign as recall 26S69. NHTSA lists it as recall 26V578000.
VINs covered by the recall became searchable through NHTSA's database on September 14, ahead of the mailed notices. The campaign applies only to certain F-150s from the 2023 through 2027 model years.
