Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison in New York for sexually assaulting former television production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006, giving the disgraced Hollywood producer a new prison term with a separate resentencing proceeding still ahead in California.
New York Supreme Court Justice Curtis Farber imposed the sentence more than a year after a Manhattan jury convicted Weinstein of first-degree criminal sexual act involving Haley. Prosecutors sought 20 years, while his attorneys asked for nine, citing his age, health and the more than six years he has already spent in custody.
Haley told the court that the assault had devastated her life and sense of security. Weinstein expressed remorse for her pain while maintaining his innocence and denying that he sexually assaulted her.
Farber told Weinstein that his accomplishments in Hollywood had been eclipsed by the allegations and prosecutions surrounding him, calling him the “literal face of the MeToo movement.” Weinstein, 74, said he plans to appeal.
Wednesday's sentence sends the New York case into another appellate stage after years of trials, reversals and deadlocked juries. The 15-year term stems from the conviction involving Haley, the guilty verdict that remained after Weinstein's 2025 retrial, and the proceedings that followed.
A Manhattan jury first convicted Weinstein in 2020 of sexually assaulting Haley and raping aspiring actor Jessica Mann. He received a 23-year prison sentence in one of the most prominent criminal cases to emerge from the allegations that fueled the #MeToo movement.
New York's highest court overturned that conviction in 2024, finding that the trial judge improperly allowed testimony about allegations outside the crimes being tried. The Court of Appeals ordered a new trial, putting Weinstein back before another Manhattan jury.
At the 2025 retrial, jurors convicted Weinstein on the charge involving Haley and acquitted him of a separate criminal sexual act charge involving former model Kaja Sokola. They could not reach a verdict on the rape charge involving Mann.
Prosecutors tried the Mann charge again this year, but another jury deadlocked in May. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office later dismissed the charge after Mann said she could not endure another trial, clearing the way for Farber to impose Wednesday's sentence.
Weinstein's legal exposure now shifts back to California, where his separate rape and sexual assault convictions remain intact even though his 16-year prison term was vacated.
A Los Angeles jury convicted Weinstein in 2022 of rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration involving model and actor Evgeniya Chernyshova, who testified that he assaulted her in a Beverly Hills hotel room in 2013.
California's 2nd District Court of Appeal upheld the convictions in June but ordered a new sentencing hearing. The panel found that the trial judge had relied in part on Weinstein's former New York convictions when determining his punishment, even though those judgments were later overturned.
A Los Angeles judge must now set a new prison term without relying on the invalidated New York convictions. Farber said Wednesday that California will also determine whether Weinstein's prison terms run consecutively or concurrently.
Consecutive terms would be served one after the other, while concurrent terms could overlap. The California decision could significantly affect how much additional time Weinstein ultimately spends in prison.
No date has been set for the California resentencing. Weinstein has also sought further review of his California case as his attorneys prepare to appeal the new 15-year judgment in New York.
