New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has cleared up lingering questions about who footed the bill for street closures surrounding Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding at Madison Square Garden, confirming that the pop star already paid the city more than $160,000 to cover the associated permit costs.

Mamdani shared the figure with reporters on Friday, July 10, during a consumer protection press conference, after being asked directly whether Swift would be reimbursing the city for expenses tied to the event, including police overtime.

According to the mayor, the payment covered both the permit itself and the broader municipal response required to accommodate the event, and he noted that the permit had only been finalized in the final days leading up to the wedding.

The clarification comes roughly a week after Swift and Kelce's wedding, which required shutting down several streets in Midtown Manhattan to the public. The closures took place on a major U.S. holiday, a detail that didn't sit well with some New Yorkers, who criticized both the scale of the disruption and the timing of the event.

Among the most vocal critics was Republican congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, who represents a New York district. In a post on X, she argued that Swift and Kelce should be responsible for reimbursing the NYPD for the roughly 130 officers needed each day to secure what she described as a lavish, thousand-guest wedding, pointing out that officers were already stretched thin covering overtime for Fourth of July events and arguing that city taxpayers shouldn't be left covering the cost.

Mamdani's comments effectively confirm that the couple did in fact pay up, addressing the exact concern Malliotakis and others had raised in the days following the ceremony. The mayor's remarks put a specific number to what had previously been an open question, even if the full scope of what that six-figure sum covers, beyond the permit and city response, hasn't been broken down in detail.

The payment adds to a run of high-profile financial gestures from the couple around the time of their wedding. Just days before the ceremony, Swift and Kelce donated a combined $26 million across 20 charities based in the United States, a gift that drew widespread attention on its own before the wedding even took place.

Despite the scrutiny surrounding street closures and city costs, the couple has kept most other details about the wedding itself under wraps. No official figure for the total cost of the event has been released, and information about what actually happened that day has remained limited in the days since.

That hasn't stopped speculation about the overall price tag. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Lindsay Landman, a luxury wedding and event planner, said that a wedding of this scale could plausibly have cost somewhere between $20 million and $25 million once every expense is factored in, though that estimate comes from an outside industry professional rather than any figure confirmed by the couple or their representatives.
