A security breach at Rockefeller Center sent a jolt through NBC's "Today" show set Thursday morning when an intruder broke past barriers and confronted co-anchor Craig Melvin with a racist outburst, according to people familiar with the matter. Police took the man into custody shortly afterward, and no one was hurt in the encounter.

The disturbance unfolded around 9 a.m. ET, after the live broadcast had already wrapped, meaning cameras did not capture the moment. TMZ was first to report the story, citing law enforcement sources who said the man had pushed his way onto the set searching for Al Roker, the network's longtime weather anchor and one of its most recognizable faces. Unable to locate Roker, the intruder turned his attention to Melvin instead, lunging toward him while shouting a racial slur directly at the anchor. Security and responding officers moved quickly to restrain and arrest the man before the situation escalated further.

A spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed the timeline to Variety, stating that officers received a report of a disorderly individual inside 30 Rockefeller Center at roughly 9:19 a.m., within the jurisdiction of the Midtown North Precinct. Responding officers took an unidentified suspect into custody without incident, the spokesperson said, adding that the investigation remains active.

Melvin has become one of the more familiar faces in NBC's morning lineup over the past several years. He was elevated to co-anchor of "Today" in 2018, and in January 2025 he stepped into an even more prominent role, taking over for Hoda Kotb alongside Savannah Guthrie during the broadcast's first two hours. Beyond his anchor duties, Melvin also co-hosts the show's third hour and fronts the syndicated true-crime program "Dateline NBC." His relationship with NBC dates back nearly two decades: he joined the network's Washington, D.C. affiliate WRC in 2008, where he cut his teeth anchoring weekend newscasts, before moving on to MSNBC in 2011.

The frightening security lapse came on the same day as another, far less dramatic development for the "Today" team. During Thursday's broadcast, Guthrie told viewers she would be temporarily stepping back from her anchor duties to begin production on a new game show built around Wordle, the viral word-puzzle phenomenon. Guthrie explained to the audience that she was heading off to film an entire season of the program, expressing excitement about sharing the finished product with fans once it airs.

The Wordle spinoff was first announced in May and is expected to debut sometime in 2027. Jimmy Fallon is producing the series alongside The New York Times, which has owned and operated Wordle since purchasing the game from its original creator in 2022. The puzzle's leap from a free daily brain teaser to a full-fledged television format underscores just how far its cultural footprint has expanded since it first went viral.

“We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios,” NBC said in a statement.

The network has not said how the man gained access to the Rockefeller Center studio.
