A 23-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon after allegedly pulling a knife on a crew member working on "Miami Vice '85," the upcoming film starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.
Alex Perez was arrested Friday, October 23, 2026, after a 42-year-old production worker reported that he displayed the weapon during an argument near Avenue N and McDonald Avenue in Brooklyn. Police recovered the knife, and no injuries were reported.
The confrontation began when Perez allegedly entered the filming area and disrupted production. A crew member approached him and told him he could not remain there, prompting an argument during which Perez allegedly pulled a large knife from his clothing.
Video footage obtained by TMZ appears to show Perez being escorted away from the production area before displaying the weapon. Officers responding to the scene took him into custody at approximately 11 p.m. without further incident.
Perez faces charges of second-degree menacing and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Under New York law, second-degree menacing includes intentionally placing or attempting to place another person in reasonable fear of physical injury by displaying a dangerous instrument. A physical injury is not required for prosecutors to pursue the charge.
The incident occurred during production of Universal Pictures' upcoming "Miami Vice '85," directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film stars Jordan and Butler as undercover detectives Ricardo Tubbs and James "Sonny" Crockett, roles originally played by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the 1980s television series.
Universal has scheduled the film for a theatrical release on May 19, 2028. The studio recently unveiled images of Jordan and Butler in character as filming continued in New York.
Police have not publicly identified a motive beyond the reported confrontation with the crew member. Information about Perez's initial court appearance was not immediately available.
