“Below Deck Mediterranean” star Nathan Gallagher says he has video footage, messages and other records that he believes provide additional context to the domestic violence case against him, speaking publicly for the first time since his December arrest on assault and choking charges.
Gallagher has pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentionally choking a person without consent and common assault. He is due back in court Sept. 1.
In a statement provided to Rolling Stone, Gallagher said reports about the case have presented only one side of what he described as a complicated situation. He acknowledged making mistakes but maintained that evidence from the night in question could provide a different account of what happened.
“I’m not claiming I was perfect. I wasn’t. I made mistakes and I will take responsibility for my own actions,” Gallagher said.
He also said he has contemporaneous video, messages and other records that he plans to address through the appropriate legal channels rather than release publicly.
Rolling Stone said it asked Gallagher to provide the materials before publishing his statement but did not receive them.
New South Wales Police arrested Gallagher on Dec. 27 after an alleged incident involving a 29-year-old woman at an apartment complex in Melrose Park, near Sydney, the previous day. Police said the woman was known to him and reported no serious injuries.
Gallagher was initially refused bail before being granted conditional release.
Police did not publicly identify the woman involved in the alleged incident. Separate court records name Gallagher’s former partner and fellow “Below Deck Mediterranean” cast member Gael Cameron as the protected person under an interim Apprehended Domestic Violence Order.
The protective order and the criminal charges are separate proceedings. The order places restrictions on Gallagher’s contact with Cameron while the case remains pending and does not determine whether the criminal allegations have been proven.
Gallagher and Cameron share a young son, and much of his statement focused on his relationship with the child and his hope for peaceful co-parenting.
“My biggest concern is my son,” Gallagher said. He added that he wants to establish a relationship with him and avoid turning the dispute between his parents into a public battle.
Gallagher also referred to other disagreements involving his relationship with Cameron but said he would not make accusations or release private documents on social media.
Cameron has not publicly responded to Gallagher’s statement.
The charges became public last week while Gallagher is appearing on the current season of “Below Deck Mediterranean,” which was filmed before his December arrest. Gallagher and Cameron first met while working together during Season 9 of the Bravo series, and their relationship and son have since appeared as part of the show.
Gallagher is scheduled to appear in Burwood Local Court on Sept. 1 for a three-hour hearing. The criminal charges and the separate protective-order matter involving Cameron remain pending.
