Britney Spears Charged With DUI in California Following March Arrest

Britney Spears is facing a misdemeanor charge in California after authorities say she was arrested in March on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Prosecutors in Ventura County formally charged the singer on April 30 with one count of driving under the influence. Her arraignment has been scheduled for May 4 at 9 a.m. PDT. Spears is not required to appear in court in person; her legal representation can attend on her behalf.

In a statement, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office indicated that it intends to offer Spears a potential plea agreement commonly referred to as a “wet reckless.” This type of resolution is typically extended in cases involving first-time offenders, relatively low blood alcohol levels, and situations where no accident or injuries occurred.

Under this agreement, a defendant may plead guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs. The DA’s office noted that this outcome is often considered when an individual demonstrates a willingness to address underlying issues, including through rehabilitation or treatment programs.

Spears recently entered a rehabilitation facility voluntarily earlier this month, a factor that could be considered in any potential plea discussions.

If the proposed agreement is accepted, the penalties would likely include a period of probation, generally around 12 months, along with financial penalties such as fines and fees, mandatory participation in a DUI education program, and credit for any time already spent in custody.

The charge stems from an incident in March when California Highway Patrol officers stopped Spears after receiving reports of a vehicle driving erratically at high speed.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said that responding officers noted signs of impairment during the traffic stop. Spears was asked to complete a series of field sobriety tests, after which she was placed under arrest.

She was taken into custody in the early morning hours, booked at approximately 3 a.m., and released later that same morning, just after 6 a.m., according to officials.

At the time of the arrest, a representative for Spears issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the situation. “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” the statement read. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.” The statement also expressed hope that Spears would receive the support needed moving forward, describing the moment as a difficult period for the artist.

Spears’ representatives have not publicly responded to the newly filed charge.
