Cher’s Son Elijah Blue Allman Indicted on Felony Charge After Alleged Break-In as Woman Hid in Closet

Elijah Blue Allman, the son of Cher and the late Allman Brothers frontman Gregg Allman, has been indicted on a felony criminal mischief charge stemming from an alleged break-in at a New Hampshire home where police say they found him smoking a cigarette while the homeowner hid in a closet.

A Rockingham County grand jury accused Allman, 50, of purposely damaging the woman’s property by breaking a glass window without having the right to do so. The indictment places the property loss above $1,500, enough for the criminal mischief allegation to be charged as a felony under New Hampshire law.

The charge stems from Allman’s March 1 arrest in Windham. Police were called to the home shortly before 10 a.m. for a reported burglary in progress, and an officer arriving at the scene found fresh footprints in the snow leading to a back door with a shattered glass pane, according to the arrest affidavit. Inside, the officer found Allman “seated on the living room couch smoking a cigarette,” while the homeowner was discovered hiding in a closet and told police she had not given him permission to enter.

Nothing appeared to have been taken from the home, but a detective later reported finding a fresh cigarette burn on the living room rug near where Allman had been sitting. He initially faced burglary, criminal mischief and breach-of-bail charges following the Windham arrest and has remained at New Hampshire State Hospital while parts of the criminal proceedings have been paused.

The alleged break-in came just two days after a separate arrest at St. Paul’s School in Concord. Authorities say Allman entered the private school after presenting himself as the parent of a prospective student, then became belligerent and poked a student with his cane. He was arrested Feb. 27 and charged with offenses including simple assault, criminal trespass and criminal threatening before being released on bail.

Allman is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 2 in Rockingham Superior Court on the new felony criminal mischief indictment. A competency hearing is also expected later this fall in connection with the Concord case.

The back-to-back arrests have unfolded alongside a separate legal fight over who should oversee Allman’s personal and financial affairs. Cher revived her effort to establish a conservatorship in California in April, asking that a professional conservator rather than herself oversee her son’s finances after the two had privately resolved an earlier conservatorship dispute in 2024.

In her renewed petition, Cher alleged that her son’s circumstances had deteriorated and argued that court intervention was necessary, describing his situation as “dire on multiple fronts.” A Los Angeles judge declined to impose an emergency conservatorship later that month, raising questions about whether California remained the proper jurisdiction while Allman was hospitalized in New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire State Hospital subsequently initiated a separate guardianship proceeding in July involving both Allman’s person and estate. His half-brothers, Chaz Bono and Devon Allman, were proposed as potential co-guardians, while Allman’s wife, Marieangela King Allman, has sought the role herself.

Cher has asked the California court to pause portions of her conservatorship case while the New Hampshire guardianship proceeding moves forward and has indicated she could abandon the California effort if a satisfactory long-term arrangement is established there.

Allman is due back in Rockingham Superior Court Oct. 2 for arraignment on the felony indictment, while the separate Concord case and competing guardianship proceedings continue.
