Brady Ebert, a founding member of the Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault following an incident involving the father of the band’s lead singer, Brendan Yates.

The charges were filed in Montgomery County, Maryland, where authorities allege that Ebert used a vehicle to strike William Yates, causing serious injuries. According to police reports and court records, the incident occurred on Sunday after officers responded to a call involving a pedestrian struck by a car.

Investigators say the situation escalated outside a residential property. William Yates reportedly exited his home after hearing a disturbance involving a vehicle, including honking and shouting. Authorities allege that Ebert was driving erratically in the area. As Yates attempted to warn family members nearby, including his daughter, her husband, and their young child, the confrontation intensified.

According to reports, Yates threw an object toward the vehicle during the exchange. Police allege that Ebert then drove the car toward both Yates and his family members, striking Yates and causing injuries to his legs. Emergency responders transported him to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.

In a statement shared with the media, Turnstile confirmed the victim’s identity and said that William Yates survived the incident and is recovering following medical treatment. The band requested privacy for the family and expressed hope for his recovery.

Ebert, 33, was arrested Tuesday after a judge issued a warrant. He is currently being held without bond. A bail review hearing is scheduled, along with a preliminary hearing set for early May. Court records indicate that Ebert initially waived his right to legal counsel during his first court appearance but later retained representation. His attorneys have not publicly commented on the case.

The Montgomery County Police Department has not released additional details beyond confirming that the investigation remains active.

Turnstile addressed the incident in a detailed statement, describing a prolonged period of concern regarding Ebert’s behavior prior to his departure from the group in 2022. According to the band, they severed ties with Ebert following what they characterized as a pattern of conduct that affected both internal relationships and the broader community.

The group stated that they had attempted to support Ebert through various means before ultimately deciding to end their professional relationship when communication deteriorated, and threats of violence allegedly emerged. They also said they had previously chosen not to publicly discuss the circumstances surrounding his departure.

Court records reviewed in connection with the case indicate that multiple individuals sought restraining orders against Ebert around the time of his exit from the band. Those petitions were denied by a judge, who cited insufficient legal grounds under Maryland law.

Formed in Baltimore in 2010, Turnstile rose from the hardcore scene to broader recognition over the past decade. Their releases, including Time & Space (2018) and Glow On (2021), expanded their audience and earned critical acclaim, with several Grammy nominations. The band continued its trajectory after Ebert’s departure, winning Grammy Awards for their most recent album, Never Enough.

Following his exit, Ebert was involved in other musical projects, though his post-Turnstile career was marked by intermittent public disputes. In recent months, reports suggested that tensions between Ebert and members of his former band had escalated.

Police have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed.
